If, like us, you stick to the same products and look day in, day out, then Christmas is a chance to switch things up a bit. You don’t have to do a total overhaul of your look, but a subtle change here and there can make all the difference.
We’ve taken some inspiration from some of our favourite famous women out there to inspire you to step outside your makeup comfort zone.
It’s a classic look that, as Joan Collins shows, never goes out date! Plus, it’s a super easy way to take your look from day to night in an instant. To prevent feathering, first line your lips with a lip pencil such as Urban Decay’s clear pencil in Ozone. Mature lips should also opt for a cream, rather than a matte, finish. It’s much more flattering and will prevent dry lips – never a good look for under the mistletoe.
Try:Clinique’s Pop Glaze Sheer Lip Colour + Primer in Fireball Pop, £17. The sheer colour means it’s a great choice for red lipstick virgins!
If red really isn’t for you, how about pink? As Strictly Come Dancing finalist Faye Tozer demonstrates, it adds a touch of fun to your look, without being as OTT as red. Team with lots of mascara and you’re ready to jive…
Try: NYX Butter Lip Gloss in Cotton Candy, £5.50. This lip gloss not only feels good on, but it’s also easy to wear in brighter shades like this one.
A smokey eye and a nude lip are another party go to but many people shy away from it as they think it’s either too complicated or only for ‘younger’ people. Trinny Woodall proves the latter is definitely not the case and thanks to her easy-to-use products, it’s also not that difficult. Layer and smudge on her Eye2Eye pots for a super easy and long-lasting smokey eye. Team with a slick of nude gloss and you’re done.
Try: Trinny London’s Smokey Eye Stack, £70, is one complete look in a handy stack of pots that you can easily carry around in your bag for touch ups. Genius!
There’s Got To Be Glitter
If you’re going to wear glittery makeup past the age of 25, then it needs to be simple and subtle. Wearing it as a liner, whether on the top or bottom of the eye, like Leona Lewis, gives a subtle shimmer without looking like you’ve run amok through a glitter factory. Team with neutral lips and you’re ready to go rock and roll around that Christmas tree.
Try: Collection Glam Glitter Gel Eyeliner in Funk 3, £2.99, Superdrug. There’s not need to splash the cash on a seasonal item like this and thanks to the fab budget beauty brands out there, you can pick one up for under a fiver easily.
Shimmer And Shine
Allergic to glitter? Then instead add a wash of shimmery eyeshadow over your lids. Choosing shades of gold, bronze or sliver means you can easily swipe over your lids, blend and go. If you need a little definition, add some brown liner and a couple of coats of mascara - there’s not much to get wrong!
Try:Bobbi Brown’s Shimmer Wash Eyeshadow, £19.50, in Champagne. This eyeshadow is super blendable so is great if you don’t usually wear colour.
Nothing says chic as much as winged eyeliner. Take inspiration from Adele who wears this look so well. You can easily apply it over your daytime makeup to give you a glam party look. Dab a touch of gold eyeliner in the corners for some sparkle and team with a pinky nude shade for that ultimate in sixties chic.
Try: They’re Real Push Up Eyeliner,£20, Benefit. Struggle with applying liquid eyeliner? Then try this beauty from Benefit, which is much easier to apply than traditional eyeliner. It also lasts the difference – yes, including a dancing on the table session to Merry Christmas Everybody!
Look like you’ve just come back from a winter break in Barbados by creating your very own winter glow. It’s great if you don’t like caking the makeup on and as our co-founder Andrea McLean shows, it oozes glamour. Start with a tinted primer such as Studio 10’s Youth Lift Glow-Plexion, £26. Apply your foundation and then finish off with a powder that enhances radiance like Filter Finish Baked Radiance Setting Powder, £25, Laura Mercier. For the final flourish use a cream blusher to contour your cheeks slightly – suck your cheeks in and apply it there - and then use a highlighter on the top of your cheekbones. Now you’re ready for your close up – or selfie!
Try: If you’re new to the world of contouring, try an easy-to-use set such as Barry M Chisel Cheeks Contour Highlighting Creams, £7.99. You literally apply and blend and are great for novices and experts alike.
