How to wear florals - and not look like a pair of curtains

There’s a sniff of spring in the air. The clocks are going forward. The nights are getting lighter and there’s even been some sunshine. All of which means, it’s time to start slowly coming out of hibernation. Time to peel off those cosy jumpers and knee-high boots. Time to maybe show an ankle or two – and it’s definitely time to ditch the black!

Every year, the high street is awash with floral fashion, which is fabulous if you like a print, however, there is always a chance you’ll end up looking like a pair of curtains, so here’s how to rock floral this spring without looking like a piece of material pulled across the window.

Dress it up

Think florals and you immediately think of dresses and there’s a good reason why. A floral print just works so damn well. Buy one of these beauties now and you’ll wear it right until September.

They look great just as they are – perhaps pop a denim jacket or cardigan over the top and keep the ankle boots until it really warms up. Buy one a little more structured and it’s perfect for the office, while a midi dress looks great with trainers for those more relaxed days.

Make it casual

For those who are dress averse, there are plenty of other options. Looking like an extra from Little House On The Prairie is chic once more, so team a ruffled floral blouses with jeans for a styled, yet casual look. Alternatively choose sweatshirts with floral embroidery or more kaftan style blouses to pair with jeans now and shorts later once holiday season hits.

Go to the dark side

Pretty floral pastels are not for everyone – especially when you’ve spent six months in black opaque tights, black jeans, black jumpers… So, what to do when the warmer months hit? Swap your little black dress for a little black floral dress – or jumpsuit. Dark florals are definitely the more grown up option and until it warms up, yes, you can wear them with your tights!

On occasion

This is where florals really come into their own – spring occasions, especially weddings, were made for a flowery print. You don’t have to go all over floral either. If you’re clever with the positioning of the print, you can use it to distract from the areas of your body you perhaps don’t like as much. Have big boobs? Choose a plain colour up top and then add florals onto the bottom half so the focus falls there.
