It seems the desire to start a family has dropped in the UK, with all but one age group showing a fall in conception. Ironically, considering how much we’re told about our dwindling fertility, the only age group to see a rise in pregnancies is the over 40s. The pregnancy rate for under-18s dropped by 7.4%, while pregnancy among the 40 plus age group rose by 2.6%. Experts are divided about what the reason for this rise might be. Some believe that rising house prices and couples needing two wages mean that women can’t afford a baby until their older. However, some believe that women are being let down by the NHS and find it difficult to obtain contraception. Whatever, these mums are in good company with the likes of Gwen Stefani, Eva Mendes and Rachel Weisz all becoming older mums, proving there very much is life after 40.
